Arithmetic

В Древния Рим така наричали заниманията и упражненията, достойни на свободния човек, за разлика от заниманията, изискващи физически труд, с който можели да се занимават само роби. Още в античността започнал да се съставя списък от дисциплини, по-късно наречени свободни изкуства.
Свободните изкуства образуват висшата научна и литературна педагогика. Число им е ограничено до седем; те са построени по значим порядък, определяющ нивото на обучение: изкуство на думите (граматика и риторика), мислене (диалектика) и числа (аритметика, геометрия, астроно­мия, музика).
